j When the sailing ship Dunedin left | Port Chalmers on 15th February 44 years <a&©., .with the first consignment j of frozen mutton and iaiv.b for the English market, little did those pioj aaeers who the work realise I the possibilities of such an adventure, j and that it would be the beginning of j what is now a great industry, iA worker at Smithfield, who distinctly remembers the" arrival j»!f the first Dunedin shipment, and saw the very sheep and lamb on sale in the market, gazed again on 19tli January. 1926, on the wonderful display of prime lamb from the Palmerston Agricultural and Pastoral Show. Admiration and praise .for a country which could .produce such fine specimens of Southdowns were heard all round. At the last meeting of the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association a letter was received from Mr R. S. Forsyth, London manager of the New' Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, stating that the 30 carcases of lamb shipped per the Matakana ex the Palmerston Agricultural and Pastoral show arrived in execellent order, and were displayed on a stall at. Smithfield market. They were a beautiful lot of lambs, it was stated, all splendid types of the best Down quality, and they arrived showing plenty of bloom. On the motion of Mr M. A. Elliott, a resolution was passed congratulating Messrs J. and D. Collis, whose animals constituted the shipment. It was stated, in the report from London (.hat praise should be extended to the Longburn freezing works for the careful dressing, handling, and cleanliness of the carcases, the condition of 'which was perfect.
