WHY THE CLERGYMEN?
AT ANZAC DAY SERVICES. Discussing the question of -who should be chosen to address the proposed citizen’s service on Anzac Day, Rev. J. A. Kempthorne, at a meetingon Wednesday evening, asked why should they select the clergymen as the speakers. At one place a man, not a clergyman, had given a most inspiring address, more inspiring than some of the clergymen were capable of, which, he added, was not to be wondered at. When selecting speakers they should not confine themselves entirely to clergymen. The Mayor, towards the close of the meeting, said he disagreed with Rev. Kempthorne, that the clergymen should take no part in the service and thought that the various duties should be distributed among the representatives of the different denominations. Rev. Kempthorxfe said he did not infer that clergymen should take no part but that they need not necessarily do the speaking. Surely there were laymen who had thoughts as well as the ministers. If the laymen had no thoughts he was sorry for the laymen.
