An amusing incident occurred during the high jump competition at the Tirau sports on Easter Monday. The event was in the closing stages, and the large crowd was speculating on the chances of the few remaining competitors, when two youngsters, some years off their ’teeijs, ended a friendly argument as to the chances of their respective heroes, in a bout of fisticuffs. The jump was quickly forgotten, and spectators, officials and competitors instinctively formed another ring around' the budding Dempseys, who were “ mixing it ” in no uncertain manner. However, honour was quickly satisfied, a couple of black eyes and a gory nasal organ evenly divided between the two combatants testifying that the engagement, though short, was of a willing character. “ Enough of that Barking-, Achmedes.”—Ancient Tale.
