PETROL TAX PROPOSAL.

TAURANGA COUNTY COUNCIL’S RESOLUTION. At the meeting- of the Tauranga County Council held in January the following resolution was adopted : That with a view to raising sufficient funds to pay the whole cost of maintenance of main highways the Government be asked to institute the petrol tax, making- suitable exemptions for dairying and other industries, and that a copy of the above resolution be sent to all counties for their support. Further replies in reference to the resolution were read at Friday’s meeting- of the council. Support of the resolution was advised by the Ohura, Whakatane, Matamata, Rotorua, Otamatea and Hutt County Councils. The Wainia-l-ino County Council qualified its support. The Whangaroa and Whang-amo-mona County Councils intimated that they were not in sympathy with the proposal. The Waiapu County Council inquired how the council proposed to regulate exemptions and what particular industries do they consider should be exempted. No action was taken by the Featherston and Waipukurau County Councils. [lf we recollect aright, the Franklin County Council and several branches of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union, including Matamata, also supported the resolution.]
