PRODUCE STATISTICS.
FARM NOTES.
RECOMMENDATIONS NOT ACTED UPON. N.Z. Meat Board Takes Action. The following letter, dated 9th December, 1925, has been addressed to the Right Hon. Sir P. Cunliffe-Lister. K.8.E., president of the, British Board of Trade, by the London manager of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, with respect to the publication of statistics of stocks of meat in cold store in Great Britain; also statistics of the amount of wool on ha id; * You will no doubt remember that the Royal (Commission on Food Prices, in its report to the British Government, strongly recommended that steps be taken by the Board of Trade to collect and publish monthly statistics of stocks of meat held in cold stor.e in Great Britain. A similar request was, I find, also made Government by the previous Linlithgow Committee's report on the distribution and prices of agricultural produce. The recent- shipping strike in New Zealand and Australia, which resulted in the hold-up of shipments of meat from both these countries, with its consequent rise in prices here, has once more drawn attention to the lack of meat held in Great Britain. “ My Board, as representing the meat producers in the Dominion of New Zealand, publishes monthly the figures of killings and stocks of meat in New Zealand, and this information is always circulated to the trade in Great Britain. The lack of similar information being available in Great Britain is a great drawback, and my Board is therefore strongly in favour of the recommendation of the Royal Commission on Food Prices being carried out. I shall, therefore, be very pleased to hear what steps are being taken to carry out the above recommendations, and I should like to express the hope that you will bring in legislation at the earliest moment to bring the recommendations into effect . “ While on the subject of the publication of statistics, I have to advise that the New Zealand Government Wool Committee has lately requested me to bring 1 efore the authorities in Great Britain .he necessity of collecting and publishing the stocks of raw and manufactur A wool in this country, as the committee is of the opinion that this information wohld be of distinct benefit, not only to the wool producers in New Zealand, but also to the trade and the general public in Great Britain. I understand that your Government has also had the views of the wool trade of Great Britain on this matter, and that provided the trade is unanimous in desiring this information to be collected, your Government will undertake to do. so. I believe the wool trade is unanimous, and I trust, therefore, that it may be possible to incorporate the necessary legislation for the collection of statistics of wool when dealing with meat statistics.”
