With the exception of two or three sight-seeing buses, and a few running between the city and Lower Hutt (says the Dominion), there were no passenger buses running to timetable in Wellington prior to last year. Indeed, bus competition with the tramways on city streets did not develop until the middle of winter, so that the activity row apparent is really one of six months’ growth. How that mode of transport has developed may be judged from the fact that at the present time there are 35 buses running on the streets of the city, exclusive of those running out of the city to Ngaio, Khandal'.ah, Petone, Lower Hutt and Eastbourne (each of which suburbs has regular services). Of the number mentioned, five are purely long-distance, sight-seeing buses, and 1 of the remaining 30, 11 belong to the j Tramways Department.
At a recent meeting of the Stratford County Council tire chairman (Cr. T. R. Anderson) reported that he had been informed that three of the smaller local bodies would not agree to the distribution of heavy traffic fees upon the basis previously agreed upon by the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association. The matter therefore would have to come before a commissioner, who would probably be a magistrate. It appeared that no one had been pressing the matter in the past, but it was time something was done, as there must be a g-ood deal of money to be distributed in this connection. It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Belcher, seconded by Cr. O’Neill, that the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association be asked what steps they proposed taking in regard to the distribution of heavy traffic fees.—Post.
