Conditions at the various timber mills operating in Westland are reported to be distinctly “ slumpy ’ owing to absence of orders. A number of the larger mills have not yet resumed since the Christmas holidays. As a result, the millers operating state that applications for employment are more numerous than at any time since the war. The men seeking work are generally of a good, promising class, and come from districts where the mills are shut down. The chief reason given for the shortage of orders is the increasing importation of foreign timbers into New Zealand and Australia.
