Nearly all motor cars made before 1903 were essentially “ horseless carriages ” —they were horse carriages in external design and layout, so that the replacement of the horse by an engine should not trespass too rudely on the susceptibilities of desired customers.

In the interests of public safety the London coroner suggests that the age for obtaining driving licenses for both cars and motor cycles should be raised to 21 years.

It is remarkable what the presentday car is capable of when put to the test. In a reliability demonstration made with a 12-h.p. car in France recently 18,630 miles were covered on the road before it came to a stop. Three sets of drivers were used, and the test lasted 30 days. The test was controlled by the Automobile Club of France. In reality the car did two years’ running in one month.

A novelty in anti-dazzle devices takes the form of a transfer with a pattern consisting of horizontal parallel lines crossed by converging- lines. This is applied to the front glass of the lamp, with the more open portion of the transfer at the bottom.
