TIRAU.

During the officers’ refresher course at Okoroire (which concluded last Thursday) two socials were promoted by Mr. A. J. Brooke in the Tirau Hall, but unfortunately the second one encountered another attraction and there were few of the officers present. However, the functions were freely supported by the public. Mr. Cliffe Litchfield met with a painful accident in the hay field last week. Mr. Litchfield was driving a sweep, which, overturned and hit him. He was severely bruised all over the body and was rendered unconscious. He has since been confined to his bed. A Tirau motorist had a very narrow escape from serious accident last week on the Tirau-Okoroire Springs road. The car, a Ford with a racing body, lies in a deep gully alongside the road near the coachbuilding factory minus a front wheel. It is stated that the driver’s eyes were blinded by the undimmed lights of another car. He was very lucky to get out uninjured. Mr. W. Rice, who hg,s been resident in the Tirau district for the past five years, has left and is now living at Rotorua. The Tirau Golf Club and most Tirau sports bodies will miss Mr. Rice’s services.

S. Gardner has completed metalling a mile of the -Matamata-Tirau road from the Tirau end and has nov/ shifted camp to the Okoroire railway station. Rev. Braeburn, of Te Awamutu, who has been appointed to the Tirau district, is expected to take up his new charge in the second week in February. Mr. and Mrs. Rapson and family, who have been spending a long holiday in North Auckland, arrived home at Tirau on Wednesday. The Keane Ladies’ Tennis Stars are now held by Mesdames Craig and Bonny, who defeated the Misses Stewart. The holders of the men’s trophies are Messrs. Scherp and Batley. The first round of the mixed doubles championship is now being played. The Tirau Tennis Club has recently installed a hot point in the kitchen of the pavilion and this is proving . a great success.
