NOTES AND COMMENTS.

COUNTY RIDING RATES. From the table of rates paid as given by the treasurer to the Matamata County Council, and published in this paper, an interesting analysis may be made, after adding the totals of the collectable rates for each riding, which are as follows, omitting fractions:— £.

Computing the proportion of rates paid, Tokoroa ratepayers are in a very creditable position at the top of the list, with a heavy margin over all other ridings:— Per Cent.

Maungatautari . . 32.6

Furthermore, it is also interesting to note that the grand total collected is only 47.2 per cent., or less than half of the amount levied. It is, therefore, no wonder that the council, after paying the hospital levy (irrespective of defaulters) and general administration expenses, has not enough left to maintain the roads in even passable condition ail the year round.
