THE tenor of the discussion at the Chamber of Commerce meeting- on Monday night is further proof of the quickened interest which is being-
shown in local affairs by ratepayers and business men of the town. In adopting- a resolution to approach the Saleyards Committee offering- assistance in an endeavour to put the company on a more stable basis, the chamber has tackled a difficult, but by no means insoluble problem. Practically ever since being formed some seven years ago, the company controlling the local saleyards has had a stiff uphill fight, and any co-operation between the two bodies will no doubt be welcomed with open arms by those concerned. That well-organised saleyards are an asset to any district goes without saying, and provided local farmers can be induced to support their own stock sales stanchly, there need be no fear of their ultimate success. Farmers are not in any way different to other sections of the community, and evidence of inducement must be forthcoming to secure their patronage. In the first place it is not a paying proposition to drive stock further along metalled roads than is absolutely necessary, for the farmer not only loses in loss of condition on stock, but in loss of rates through needless damage to roads. To drive this point home propaganda is necessary, and if such an effort is backed up by further practical work on the part of others, success will be assured. In this direction attention must be given to -the yards to ensure that they are brought thoroughly up-to-date in every way so that all classes of stock may be handled expeditiously and safely. Approaches to the yards should be of the best to eliminate waste of time through confusion and “ boxing of stock. To ensure such convenience extra capital will be necessary, but the amount is by no means exorbitant, and will no doubt be
found as a result of the suggested conference referred to above. Then with the provision of a' clean up-to-date business area as a means of supplying the trade wants’ of local settlers attending- sales as a further attraction, the local stock yards will .soon take that rightful place which the progress of the district warrants.
Something is at time said about buyers, but experience the world over has shown that buyers will go anywhere in order that their requirements may be met. It therefore follows that given the above facilities there need be no fear on this score, and to secure these facilities but a modicum of effort is neecessary on the part of all those who have the welfare of the town and surrounding districts at heart.
