ELECTRIC LINE POLES.

METHOD OF PRESERVATION

Nature’s Way the Best. Various preparations are used, with indifferent success, in attempts to preserve posts and poles in the ground. Referring to this subject, which is one of great importance to power boards and the P. and T. Department, Mr. H. K. Lateman (district engineer, P. and T.), stated to a representative of the Matamata Record that nature herself provides the best preservative in the form of sap. Of this fact, he had a curious proof some years ago, when inspecting a very old line. Part of the line ran across a gully, and was very difficult country. All the poles were supposed to be charred' and a tar solution applied, but.the contractor bad shirked the “ finishing touches ” in the less accessible places, where he thought inspection unlikely. It was found that the untreated poles were in a good state of preservation, ■whereas the treated ones had rotted badly, showing that the treatment ■was waste of time and money, and that Nature could not he improved upon.
