LOCAL AND GENERAL.
■ The Pd taruru Press office will be : closed on Christmas Day and Boxing- ! Day and also on New Year’s Day. I On Saturday, January 2, this office will be open till noon for receiving -advertisements. , The Putaruru War Memorial obelisk was erected last week, and it is ex- ' r-ected that the unveiling- ceremony ■ will take place at an early date. A call to Rev. M. Richards, of Mor- ' rinsville, from the Presbyterian coni g-reg-ation at Takapuna, has been sustained by the Waikato Presbytery, j Rev. Richards has accepted. . Thirteen scholars sat at Putaruru , school last week for their proficiency . certificates under Inspector Munro. Of this number twelve passed, the : thirteenth getting- a competency. . That many county residents are ' fully alive to the great advantages to ’ be obtained in making- all possible ; purchases at local shops, is evidenced , by the fact that a committee from . Tokoroa spent several hours in Pu- , taruru one day this week securing 1 presents for a Christmas Tree, which is to be erected for the children at that centre. There is also a moral attached to this story in the value of advertising, for the successful retailer had made a particular feature of this section of the shop in the advertising columns of the Press. The greatest of all modern society dramas, entitled “ My Lady’s Dress,” will be screened at the Putaruru picture theatre next Saturday. A magnificent cast includes Estelle Taylor (wife of Jack Dempsey, the boxer), and Marc McDermott.*
The monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce, which should have been held on Monday night lapsed through want of a quorum, only five members turning up. An advertisement in this issue calling for tenders for' road works should, encourage Waotu and Putaruru residents to look forward! to somewhatimproved conditions of transport during the coming winter. A start is to be made with the metalling of the Waotu outlet to Putaruru, which is one of the many works included in the county main road loan. Kensington street, Putaruru, is to have a metal surface put on, and a very bad length of the Huihuitaha road near Mr. K. Scott’s is to be surfaced. During the past week the engineer to the Matamata County Council, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald, and the local health inspector, Mr. H. Sergeant, have both inspected the proposed site for a sanitary farm at the back of the Putaruru Domain, and expressed themselves as being satisfied with its location. Provided the sanction of the local Domain Board is obtained, approximately 20 acres of this area will be used for sanitary purposes during the next few. years. The ICeith Kennedy Company of entertainers appeared in the Putaruru hall on Monday night, before a very poor attendance. Despite this handicap, however, a most successful entertainment was given, the audience being most enthusiastic in their reception of the various items. Mr. Keith Kennedy is an artist of no mean ability, being especially clever on the violin. Mr. Kennedy has a collection of Russian, Chinese, African and other musical instruments, and gave selections on each. One instrument in pai*ticular, the vio!-de-g-amba, is over 300 years old. There were two lady artists in the company, who delighted with character and other songs, and also a comedian who proved’ to be a very clever performer on the flute. The whole performance was a musical treat, and greatly appreciated by those present.
