CHAMBER Of COMMERCE.
' MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the . Putaruru Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday night, when the fob •lowing members were pre.sent: Messrs. Barnett (chairman), Vosper, Nickle. Spears, Smith, Scott, Griffiths and ■ Dukeson (secretary). NEW MEMBERS. The following- new members were elected: Messrs. G. Nickle, A. C. Thompson, L. C. M. Wilson and C. D. Brown. CORRESPONDENCE. The Prime Minister wrote thankingthe chamber for its congratulations and good wishes on his attaining the Premiership. TAUMANGI GOODS SHED. The Prime Minister wrote in reply to a request by the chamber, asking for a goods shed at Taumangi, stating that he had had a return for three -months prepared, and it showed that 13 -consignments of manure and one "truck of lime had been received at ' Taumangi during the busiest period of the year. He -had no information ' re manures or other goods in truck loads being sent to Putaruru on be- 1 half of Taumangi settlers in order to ! avtoid risk of loss by weather l . The '' stationmaster at Putaruru had no j knowledge of complaints or any diffi- - cutties, and manure was always securely covered against the weather. I Therefore, ojving to the financial position, and .the large number of applications on the waiting list, he very .much regretted that jin was unable to accede to the chamber's request. On the motion of Mr. Vosper, it i was decided to write’ to Taumangi .asking for coiftirmay-on of their com- .
plaints. / fg, w TIMBER ROYALTIES. ' The Qc-mmissioner of State Forests IRTOte re the claim df the Maiamata County Council for share o 1 royalties •Received from the Selwyn Timber Co., stating that as the sawmill area hel<4 the company is part of the SelwjSt settlement, wliich was acquired for forestry purposes under special legis.lation, the timber royalty was not ,sub j tat to deductions for payment of subsidies’' to local bodies. POLLING BOOTHS. - 'Mr. Barnett movec: that ,the Government be urged to- use the Public Hall instead of the school as a pooljug booth at election times.. This was seconded by Mr. Spears and carried -unanimously. t POLICE STATION. p On the motion or Messrs. Barnett and Scott it was «ecided to send wires to Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P., jind to the Minister for Internal Affairs, drawing attention to the urgent need for the new police station, and asking that tenders be called for its erection, .as promised, at an early date. POST OFFICE MATTERS. Mr. Nickle requested that the postmaster at Putaruru be asked to leave the door of the letter-box lobby open on Sundays for the convenience of residents living at a. distance from the post office. Mr. J. S. Smith -suggested that the -great irregularity iof the clock outside the post office be mentioned at the same time, as it was practically useless at the moment for giving the correct time.
On the motion of Messrs. Barnett | and Scott the matter was left in the ' hands of Mr. Vosper and the secretary ] •with power to- act. J SIGN POSTS. j Mr. Vosper brought up the question of the need for sign-posts on junctions of flie roads near Putaruru. | Mr. Spears dealt with the* question in great detail, stating that he was j the local representative -of the Auck- i land Automobile. Association, and j that 350 signs were being arranged ■ for, as well as road maps. i On the motion of Messrs. Barnett 1 and Vosper, the matter of sign-posts j was left in Mr. Spears’ hands. CAMPING GROUNDS. j
Mr. Griffiths suggested that some- j thing* might be done in the direction of providing a camping ground foi j motorists at Putaruru, and- this maiter was also left with Mr. Spears. j APOLOGIES. Apologies for absence were tendered | from Messrs. Alcorn, Snell, Smith and Neal. TOWN AREA. Mr. Barnett reported receiving a letter from the county clerk, stating - that he had drawn up a provisional list of ratepayers included in the suggested town area,- -as -outlined by the local committee, and asking that a deputation be sent to check same with the engineer and himself. The matter was left in the hands of Mr. Vosper, as Mr. Barnett would not be available this week.
_ VOTE OF SYMPATHY. Oi. the motion of Mr. Barnett a vote >cf sympathy was passed with ’’Mr. and Mrs. Yandle in their recent bereavement. The secretary was / instructed to convey same* by letter.
