STOCK SALES.
CLEARANCE SALE. Messrs. Dalgcty and Company, Ltd., held a very successful sale of 300 dairy heifers on aceountof the Matarawa Land Co. at Tokoroa on Thursday, 6th August. There was a large attendance of buyers from all parts of the Waikato and a splendid sale resulted, business being- very keen and prices obtained being- very satisfactory. The arrangements under Mr. John Campbell’s supervision were very complete. Friesian heifers sold from £8 to £l6 10s, Shorthorn heifers £6 to £lB, Jersey heifers to £l9 ; also sold on account of Mr. Carr-Rollett other cows and heifers at market rates. SALE OF GRADE HERD.
Mr. J. Cassidy, of Kereone, recently disposed of his herd by private sale at a fairly substantial figure. For the past season his herd had averaged approximately 3001 b of butterfat per cow and consisted of g-rade Jerseys and Jersey cross. About two weeks ago he sold 52 cows, the majority of tire herd, for £l2 10s a head to Mr. Abbott, of Te Puke. MATAMATA. There was a good yarding of cattle at the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co.’s regular Matamata stock sale on Wednesday. An interesting feature was the sale of 12 pedigree Friesians from Mr. F. G. Dobson. Mr. A. S. Thii-1-wall, of Matamata, was a prominent buyer, securing several of these highclass cows, and paying top price, for Hillerest Domino Blend, at 32g-ns. For others Mr. Thirl wall paid from 20gns to 32gns. A choice line of grade Jersey heifers brought £9 15s to £ll 15s, others £7 5s to £9 10s, backward sorts £5 10s to £6 10s, cows, mixed, £8 10s to £lO 10s, others £5 5s to £6 ss, fat cows- £7 10s to £B, medium _so-rtg"iC 15s to £7, lighter* sorts £6 Is to £6 14s, -ffesfi-conditioned store cows £4 17s to £5 7s 6d, others £3 5s to £3 18s. Pigs : Light porkers £2 6s, slips 26s to 30s, weaners £1 Is to 255, others 15s»- The demand for dairy cattle in general was somewhat slack.
MORRINSVILLE. The Farmers’ Auctioneering- Co.’s Morrinsville yards on Friday contained the largest yarding this year, the selling of the dairy stock concludingin miserable weather conditions at about 4.50 p.m. Taking the sale as a whole the prices were good, those for fat steers rising to a level that
has not been attained in Morrinsville for about three years. The highest rate for fat steers was £l7 ss, a pen sold on behalf of Mr. R. Scott, of Morrinsville, it being estimated that their value approximated £2 2s per 1001 b. Fat cows, also, reached remarkably good prices, £l2 2s (sold on account of Messrs. Henry Bros., Tatuanui) being the top, with another line on behalf of Mr. D. Douglas, of Morrinsville, at £ll 12s 6d. Other prices for fat cows, of which there was a particularly larg-e muster, ranged from £9 2s 6d to £9 17s 6d. There was not a great number of fat heifers penned, these reaching £9 2s 6d. The yarding of dairycows wars particularly larg-e, two herds of 38 and 24 respectively being included among the several hundred dairy animals offered. Some very fair prices were realised in this class, the: top price being £l4 for a cow from Mr. P. Brohan’s herd. The sheep market, especially for wethers, was also bright, wethers on account cf Smith Bros. (Kiwitahi) and Dr. A. S. Brewis (Mangeteparu) realising- £2 4s 6d. Pigs were penned in particularly’ large numbers, the accommodation being totally inadequate to, hold all those offering- and many being sold on the carts. Thee prices showed a slight decline on recent rates. The prices are:—Beef: Heavy fat steers, £l7 ss, lighter sorts £l2, small and unfinished £9 12s Gd to £10; heavy fat cows £ll 12s 6d to £l2, lighter £9 2s 6d to £9 17s 6d, poorer sorts £6 10s to £8 15s; fat heifers £8 5s to £9 2s 6d, others £6 10s to £6 17s Gd-, empty heifers £3 2s to £3 10s; store cows £3 15s to £4 16s, others £2 to £3 10s, well-bred empty Jersey heifers £4 15s, yearling Jersey cross heifer calves £2 15s to £3 7s, poorer sorts £1 7s to £1 15s. Dairy cattle: Mr. W. Frost’s herd, cows from £5 to £lO 10s and heifers from £5 to £6 ss; Mi-. Brohan’s herd, cows up to £l4, others from £lO to £ll and poorer sorts at £6 10s. Other dairy stock: Jersey cross springing heifers £lO to £l3, others £7 to £9, Holstein springing heifers £S, cows £9 10s to £lO 10s, others £5 to £6. Sheep: Wethers, £2 4s 6d, ewes 33s to 365, ewes in lamb 30s to 355, others 255, hog-g-ets 26s 4d to 33s 3d. HAMILTON. At the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co.’s Frankton sale on Tuesday there was a fail- entry of stock of all classes. The competition was again firm throughout and was more noticeable in the beef pens, which again showed a marked advance on values received the previous week. The following are quoted:—Beef : Medium-weight prime steers £ls to £ls 15s, light prime £l3 12s 6d to £l4, best fat cows £ll 5s to £ll 15s, light prime £S to £9 18s, ordinary and light £5 9s to £5 ISs, unfinished £4 5s to £5 Bs, good-framed store cows £4 to £5, others £3 5s to £3 15s, 18-months £4 17s, sma.M Jer-sey-cross yearling heifers 32s 6cl. Medium fat wethers £2, mediumquality fat ewes 34s to 35s 6d, forward woolly hog-g-ets 28s to 295, small 18s 6d, culls 12s sd, cull ewes 6s 6d. Pigs : Light baconers £4 2s to £4 10s, others £3 10s to £3 16s, small porkers £2 10s to £3 3s, slips 28s to 355, weaners 16s to 225.
WAIKATO MARKET REPORT. The Farmers’ Auctioneering Company report under date August 10: Beef.—There has been a sharp rise for all classes, prime ox making from 37s 6d to £2 and prime cow from 34s to 365, and; we are still likely to see higher prices. Fat»,Sheep.—The market is inclined to harden but the rise has been very small in comparison with the rise in beef. Store Sheep.—Prices continue firm for all classes with a good inquiry. Stam-e Cattle.—There is a big inquiry for all classes and prices have taken a big jump, due no doubt to the shortage of cattle offering, grown and store steers belLg much sought after ; also a good demand- for empty heifers, store cows and breeding cows. .Dairy Cattle. —A good demand: exists for good herds close to profit ; also good springing heifers are making good money with a prospecU of "hiring dearer ao Yoon as the feed
comes away. Pigs.—Fat pigs and porkers are very firm, not sufficient coming forward to satisfy the demand, making from 7id to Sid per pound. Stores are coming forward in big numbers and making good prices. Horses.—Still a good demand for heavy and useful farm sorts, with the light class dull of sale.
