HERD-TESTING SUBSIDIES.

DAIRY COMPANIES’ SHARE A Morrinsville Refusal. When the question was discussec of subsidising the operations of th< New Zealand Co-op. Herd-testing* As sociation, opinion was divided at tin annual meeting* of the MorrinsvilU Co-op. Dairy Co. on Thursday, wher it was decided not to contribute the suggested subsidy of 6d per cow. The chairman (Mi*. F. W. Seifert) said that in addition to the subsidy the company would have to be a party to the bank guarantee to the extent of Is per cow. The subsidy would be <

on the number o-f tested cows supplying- the factory. He moved that the company pay the proposed subsidy provided the Government paid a subsidy of Is. The chairman was reminded that the Is subsidy had been refused by the Government. To this the chairman said that Mr. Nosworthy was not the only man, and that he might not be there next year. The idea was to endeavour to force the Government to give a subsidy. Herd-testing was not worth “ tuppence ” without a Government subsidy. He did not always agree with the N.Z.C.D.C., but the herd-testing system was one of the best things it had introduced. He considered that eventually the Government would give the Is subsidy. Mr. P. McNaughton asked woula the company’s proposed contribution come out of the factory funds, and would all the suppliers have to help to pay even if they did not have any cows tested. The chairman. Yes. Mr. J. E. Leeson said the farmers were too fond of running to the Government for everything, and if the Government gave the Is subsidy they would want to have “ a finger in it.” Things appeared G: bave been running along quite satisfactorily as they were, and those who were using another system of testing should not have to pay for this one. He would not support the motion. Mr. R. H. Haycock seconded the motion pro forma. Mr. N. Anderson supported Mr. Leeson. Mr. Ross: This testing association is going to saddle us all with a loafer going round testing- the cows. The motion was lost, there being no audible support.
