TIMBER CARTAGE.
EFFECT ON THE ROADS. Council and Motor Traffic. The question of royalty for the cartage of timber over the county roads—such traffic being* classed as “ extraordinary traffic ” —was again before the Matamata County Council on Friday. A sawmillei* who proposes milling* at Maungatautari and carting the output 11 miles to Cambridge wrote asking* what would the royalty be if he used a motor lorry with trailer, the council previously having advised him that the rate for motor haulage would be 2s 6d per 100 ft and for haulage by horse-drawn vehicle Is per 100 ft. Cr. S. H. Judd (Maungatautari riding) agreed that a lorry and trailer would mean distributing the load over three pairs of wheels, but force of the drive would still be on one pair. This was serious as there was a long* hill to go up and it was hard to see how considerable damage to the roadway could be avoided—in fact more than the 2s Gd royalty would cover. The council resolved to adhere to its previous decision as to royalty rates and to advise that no timber carting would be allowed at all during* the winter months unless by special permission. The agreement between the Waotu Timber Company and the council for the maintenance of the Waotu road, Putaruru, by the company, was received from'the council’s solicitors.
