TE WHETU.
ANNUAL SCHOOL CONCERT. The annual school conceit was the outstanding item of last week at Te Whetu, an attractive programme being submitted to a large attendance at the Taranaki Hall on Saturday evening.
The whole of the programme was enthusiastically received by the audience, and encores were demanded. Much credit is due to the headmaster, Mr. H. Jory, and his assistant, Miss Stone, for their careful selection and preparation of the various items, the programme going with a swingthrough out. Mr. W. Randell ably acted as accompanist to all musical items ,as well as suppling the music for dancing, which followed the closing* item of the concert.
The following was the programme rendered:—“ Welcome,” dialogue, Jim Smith and May Randell and schoolchildren; marching song, school children; recitation, Doris Hearn; concerted item, “ Willie Winkie,” infant childre; recitation, Thelma Hearn; pianoforte solo, Daisy Forbes; recitation, Keith French; solo. “ Lullaby Low,” Beatrice Beston; three bears, Sylvie Beston, Pat Burke and Billy Stevens; six old women (humorous), Bessie Moulden, Elsie Stevens, Beatrice Beston, Thelma and Doris Hearn and E. Dodson; solo, Alice Redman; Chinaman song, Ray Dobson and schoolchildren; nursery rhymes, Pat Pettit and Jean Walsh (Miss Mutfett), June Beston (Little 80-Peep), Rita and Meta O’Brien (Jack and Jill), Stuart Randell (Boy Blue); Queen of Hearts, Inah Jamieson, Arthur Stevens and Doug. Dobson; wooden pail, Harry Jensen and Eileen French and schoolchildren; dolly show, Elsie Stevens, E. Dobson, Doris and Thelma Hearn, Agnes Dobson and Jennie Walsh; solo, “ Ain Folk,” Miss Peggy Walsh; the wishing well, Doris Hearn, Nona Pettit, Agnes Dobson and fairies (Daisy Forbes as Snow White, Edith Dobson as Ruby Red, Inah Jamieson as Sapphire Blue); Highland Fling, Edith Dobson, accompanied by Piper Burke; concerted item, “ Goodnight,” schoolchildren.
A cake-guessing competition place during the evening for a cake donated by Mesdames Dobson and Hearn, and resulted in a tie between Mr. Randell, senr., and Mr. Beston. These gentlemen handed the trophy back to the committee, and it was later sold, the proceeds benefitting- by a considerable amount. The evening’s proceeds are to be added to subscriptions in aid of the annual school picnic, and for which great preparations are afoot. CRICKET.
A cricket match between two elevens representing South Taranaki and Barts., was played on Sunday (excluding all senior players), the result being a \yin for South Taranaki by 15 runs. The Te Whetu Club have completed their first round of the Leggatt Shield competition, with 2 wins and 2 losses.
