TENNIS.

THE PUTARURU CLUB. Opening of the Season. The tennis courts on the Putaruru War Memorial Park were officially opened for play for the season on Saturday afternoon. The weather, though threatening- at times, held good, and the large number who attended represented an appreciable measure of encouragement to the club, for besides a repi-esentative gathering of local people members from more distant centres, such as Puketurua and Te Whetu, were also present. Both the hard court and the grass courts were found to be in very satisfactory order, and gave enjoyable play, which was continued well into the twilight. Lady members of the club provided a very tasty afternoon tea for the gathering. Altogether it was agreed that with a resident caretaker at the park now installed and with some first-class tennis players included among newlyarrived residents of Putaruru, the club’s prospects for the coming season were particularly bright.
