THIRDS FROM TOWN SECTIONS.
A COUNTY CONSIDERATION. As the Matamata County Council was rising for the luncheon adjournment on Friday, Cr. E. J. Darby, Putaruru riding, seized the opportunity to prefer a request. He said the subdivision and sale of land at Arapuni as town sections meant an increase in annual revenue to the Crown from Is 3d per acre to 64s per acre, and this should mean a corresponding increase in the thirds remitted to the council. He would ask that such thirds be spent solely in the Arapuni township, where they were earned. Cr. S. H. Judd: But Arapuni traffic travels over other of the county roads. Ci*. Darby: Yes, the Putaruru-Ara-puni road; but the Public Works Department is bearing the cost of that road. It is costing the council nothOther members doubted whether the council would get the extra in thirds, and it was agreed that there would be time enough to consider Cr. Darby’s request when the money actually came to hand. “ WINGS ” to BRIDGES. Another matter which Cr. Darby brought forward was the need for “ wings ” to the bridges on the Pu-taruru-Arapuni road. He said the old bridges had suitable protections of this nature for traffic, but on the approaches to the new bridges there was a considerable element of danger at resent. It was resolved ' to communicate with the Public Works Engineer in charge at Arapuni, Mr. T. Rabone, on the matter.
