LOCAL AND GENERAL.

It is expected that most of the timber mills in the Putaruru district will close .for the Christmas and New Year holidays on or about Saturday, December 20. The rainfall at Putaruru during November, registered by the school gauge, totalled 2.43 inches. This is the smallest total for any month since the keeping of the records was started, about the middle of this year. Mr. A-. C. Thomps ; on, manager of the Motu branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed manager of the Putaruru branch, which is expected to open for business about the third week in January. It is understood that there are several applicants awaiting private boxes at the Putaruru post office, all the available boxes having been previously taken. This means that the installation of more is required, and it is hoped that these will be provided before the New Year. Trout-fishing in the Waikato river in this district is now giving fairly good sport. At Ongaroto on a recent week-end a party of two rods landed six nice fish, averaging about 41b ir. weight, while at Waotu some days ago another party on the river secured eight fish of an average weight of about 31b. In the streams so far the sport can only be described as “ patchy.” Mr. G. Sampson, engineering surveyor in the Public Works Department, Christchurch, has been appointed to take charge of the location transmission lines in the Waikato. He will locate the main power transmission line from Arapuni to Auckland, also from Tauranga to Waikino, and from Penrose for the supply of power in bulk to the Waitemata Power Board. The Finance Act of last session transferred: from the Lands for Settlement Department to the Forestry Department an area of 53,196 acres in the Selwyn Settlement as a permanent forestry reserve. The area apparently lies beyond Mangatapu, the Selwyn Timber Co.’s sawmilling’ centre, and includes much valuable native timber. The royalty from this will go to the Forestry Department, but a proportion will be remitted to the Matamata County Council, as the local authority for the district, and it is estimated that the council will receive several thousand pounds in all from this source. The act seems to indicate that when the native bush is cut out the land will be used for growing other timber.

Toy land at Tomalin’s, a joy for adults and the kiddies, grand selection, prices right.*
