Upset Prices Exceeded
The advertised auction sale of houses by the Commissioner of Crown Lands duly took place at Matamata on Saturday morning, Mr. R. C. Pollock, Field Inspector (Hamilton), conducting the sale in the Farmers’ Union Hall.
A four-roomed dwelling in Tower road, a quarter of a mile from the station (£BSO upset price), was bought by Mr. Benjamin Roberts for £9OO. There was brisk bidding in bids of £lO until the £9OO was reached. A five-roomed house on the main road, close to the post office and station. did not attract a bid of £9OO, upset price, and so was passed in. Another five-roomed house, described as being about 10 chains from the post office, but stated by individuals as being further (£850), was purchased by Mrs. J. F. Downie for £B6O.
