COMMERCIAL TREE-CROWING.
EXTENT OF THE INDUSTRY. Assuming Big Proportions. Subscription of Capital. That the commercial afforestation industry in the Putaruru district is assuming- very big- proportions was indicated by Mr. D. S. Wylie, of Messrs. Smith, Wylie and Co., Ltd., the promoters of Afforestation, Putaruru Forests, Ltd., New Zealand Perpetual Forests, Ltd., and Putaruru Nurseries, Ltd. In discussing- the matter last week, Mr. Wylie stated that since his visit to Australia to open branches of the firm in the Commonwealth, bonds were selling- there at the r£te of 400 per week. Altogether in New Zealand and Australia the company had sold bonds to the value of over a quarter of a million sterling since it first started selling them, a little less than nine months ago. In the Putaruru district next season the companies mentioned would be spending some £28,000 in -tree planting, irrespective of such prior work as fencing, etc.
At Putaruru Nurseries in this, the concern's first season, sufficient seed for several million trees was sown, and a good take is reported. It is expected that New Zealand Perpetual Forests, Ltd., will extend its holding at Maraetai to 40,000 acres almost at once.
