THE PUTARURU PRESS.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1024. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Office ... Main Street •Phone 28 - - P.O, Box 44 (Lewie, Portas and Dalli more's Buildingrs.)

44 I have just paid my rates to-day, so I expect the surfaceman in our riding: can be kept on,” said Cr. C. A. Stopfovd at Friday’s meeting- of t-he Matamita County Council. The Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Massey) arrived at Okoroire Hot Springs on Sunday, where he intends to spend a week’s holiday recuperating from his recent illness and stress of his State duties. Mr. S. Mays, a well-known Auckland barrister, was a passenger by Friday afternoon’s Rotorua express, en route to Putaruru. From the latter place he intended to journey to Taupo by motor car. The Arapuni post and telegraph office was removed this week from the Public Works building in the Arapuni permanent village to premises adjoining the canteen store in Armstrong Whitworth’s No. 1 village (against the permanent village). A ratepayer of the Matamata county, in a letter received r.t the last meeting of the council, asked the council to sell him a strip of land. Inter alia, he stated that he owed the council rates. “Is he waiting to sell the land before he can pay the rates ? ” asked a councillor. The meeting held on Friday evening to consider the formation of a chess club at Putaruru was attended by five enthusiasts. It was agreed that the formation of the club'be deferred until the New Year, but meanwhile a list of those desiring to join —be compiled.

The supply received at the Tokoroa cheese factory last month (October) was as follows, the corresponding figures for the previous October being given in parentheses for the purposes of comparison : Milk, 393,9551 b (418,9681 b); butterfat, 14,824.421 b (15,920.631 b); test, 3.76 (3.8). Congratulations were extended to Cr. C. A. Stooford at the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council on the attainment of his 60t*h birthday. Cr. Stopford, in reply to the remarks of the chairman (Cr. J. W. Anderson), .said he would put in another year in the council, *and then—good-bye. The monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce convened for Monday evening lapsed for want of a quorum, and it was consequently agreed that the meeting be adjourned for a week. Meanwhile, in response to a request by the RegistrarGeneral, the president and secretary are to mark the boundaries for the proposed Putaruru registration district for marriages and return the map to him. The benefits of dual linguistic powers are fully appreciated by the Maoris in a certain riding in Matamata county, and also by the unfortunate cattle ranger. It was remarked at the monthly meeting of the council that the rangei had complained to a councillor that while he was talking in English with one Maori the others were having a little conference in Maori at t-he same time. Presumably the Maori spokesman was being 44 prompted ” by his fellows with a view to 44 beating ” the ranger. On Saturday afternoon the Church of England Ladies’ Guild, Putaruru.. held a very successful gift afternoon in the Town Hall. About 40 people were present and these brought many useful and ornamental gifts and toys for the guild’s annual bazaar in December. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and competitions were held, resulting as follow:—Paper competition, Mrs. Herring; spice compejtition, Miss M. Rolfe. Altogether a very pleasant afternoon was spent and the guild benefited to the extent of many pounds’ worth of goods for the various bazaar stalls. On Monday, November 17, the Arapuni contractors, Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Ltd., took over from the Public Works Department the Arapuni access road from the Putaruru hotel corner to Arapuni. The portion through Putaruru town, from the hotel comer to the Arapuni railway siding, has not yet been completely remetalled by the Public Works Department. A constant stream of machinery and materials from England is now arriving for the contractors, and so far in handling this the railway services from Auckland and the motor lorry services between Putaruru and Arapuni are reported to have proved fairly satisfactory.
