RUGBY PRESENTATIONS.

THE ANNUAL SOCIAL. Past Season’s Awards. The Putaruru Rugby Union’s third annual presentation social was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening, when there was a gathering of well over 50 couples, including representatives of the various clubs comprising the union. Dancing, for which firstclass music was rendered by the Melody Four Orchestra and for which Mr. C. D. Brown acted as the M.C., formed the principal pastime of the evening, and with the floor in excellent order, was very much enjoyed. Prior to the supper dance Mr. J. Barr Brown, chairman of the union, called upon the president, Mr. N. H. Ashford, to present the trophies for the 1924 season. Prefacing the presentation by a few appropriate remarks, Mr. Ashford then handed to Mr. L. Taylor, as captain of the Selwyn team, the Ibbotson Shield and the Leslie Shield in recognition of their winning the union’s competition for the season, and the Amopiu Cup, in recognition of their winning the knock-out competition. To Mr. W. Henderson, captain of the Rovers team, he handed the Nathan Cup. the trophy for the runners-up in the union’s competition. In addition, the new banner for the schools’ competition was presented to Mr. J. Gasparich, of the schools union, on behah of the Waotu-Lichfield team, and a medal given by Mr. W. D. Roy for the player in the United team showing the most improvement during the season was presented to Mr. K. Day. The various awards were greeted by popular applause, and speeches by the recipients were insisted on. In accepting the schools banner, Mr. Gasparich returned hearty thanks to the union and Mr. Ashford for providing such a fine trophy to encourage the boys in the game, “and stressed that as a country combination, LichfieldWaotu team'had done very creditably in becoming the first winners of it. Supper and further dancing concluded the entertainment. Music for an extra dance was played by Mrs. Aspden. The funds of the union will benefit by several pounds as the result of the social.
