THE PUTARURU PRESS. Office ... Main Street Then* 28 - - P.O. Box 44 (Lewis, Portas and Dallimore’s Buildings.) THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1924. DAIRY AMALGAMATION.

THE closing of the Puketurua cheese factory may at first sight seem a cause for regret in that it represents the end of a local enterprise. However, jt is a case where the enterprise has really served its purpose, and although Puketurua is now virtually without its factory, the district has instead something which will probably prove of far greater value to it in the long run, namely, excellent road access to its railway outlet at Putaruru, and this, too, at no cost to the settlers.

While the old roadi over Pearson’s Hill, remained the best choice, the cartage of cream to Putaruru would have been a costly and somewhat hazardous business, with deterioration and loss only too probable, especially in the wet months of spring. It was through the years of these conditions that the factory was more or less a benefit to the settlers, allowing of delivery of their milk and its manuf at a minimum in time and oSta-iujation. So .v.Vith the good road, and • railage cosfcl find .T3*fcrgre~logeiitfr a' greatly reduced item, and the tendency to take advantage of this was noticeable even before the Puketurua company amalgamated with the Rotorua company, while l also the greater returns from butter, as against cheese in past seasons, r okjblv was-do- some- extent respon- . libie. too. Thus; altogether, with **■'*'*fke'Voo<rVoad ending their period of isolation and with their output being handled by a very modern factory at a lower cost than was possible at Puketurua, the settlers there will doubtless find the amalgamation prove quite satisfactory, though not forgetting that their own factory served a good purpose during its existence.
