TIRAU.

I TOWN IMPROVEMENTS. \ A good piece of work has been | done in front of the Masonic Lodge building- at Tirau. Where entry was obtained before through the County I Council property, a' new fence has j now been erected in front of the 1 Lodge. A neat gate and entrance has been put .in and the effect has been to smarten up the biulding* and the top end of Rose street generally. The work was done by Mr. Wm. Hetherington. ATHLETICS. Although the football season is oyer, nevertheless a great intetrest in New Zealand’s national game is still maintained locally. This is probably (due to the (so far) victorious tour of the All Blacks. The fact remains, however, that whenever “ the sports ” of Tirau foregather at the post office (or thereabouts), there is considerable talk of the matches now being played abroad. It is interesting to note that Tirau has one thing in particular in common with the New Zealand representative team, and that is that the Patetere Football Club, fwhich has its headquarters in the town, has always played in the colours of the celebrated “ All Blacks.” Writing of the Patetere Club, reminds the scribe that the club has now got the Matamata Rugby Union’s senior , championship cup and banner safe in its keeping-, and that a social function will shortly be held in order to provide an opportunity for the formal presentation of the trophies. It is also quite on the cards that the Golf club will similarly act in the way of handing out its prizes to the successful winners of the events, already published in the Record. With regard to tennis, Mr. H. Selby has been appointed captain of the Tirau club for the coming season, and Mrs. Vv. Craig vice-captain. The opening of the courts will take place shortly. PERSONAL. Mr. A. Hampton has now relinquished his farm and is staying with Mr. H. Selby. Mr. Hampson intends leaving for the South Island shortly. Plis Brother, Mr. G. Hampson, who is well known in Tirau, is now at Ngongotaha, near Rotorua.
