QUARTERS FOR MARRIED MEN.
BUILDING “ HUTS ” AND HOUSES. Temporary and Permanent Villages. The building programme at Arapuni makes very impressive headway from week to week. At present, at the dam site village, besides the three barracks for 160 single men, cookhouse, etc., 10 “ huts ” for married men, out of the first lot of 16, are now being built, besides a store shed and a garage. At the permanent village eight more houses are now in hand, while the Arapuni school is well on the way to completion. Opposite the permanent village, the contractors’ offices—a commodious set—are now in occupation, and alongside another big store shed with garage is being completed. At the Huihuitaha village timber is arriving for another batch of huts for married men. Altogether, with the best part of 100 carpenters engaged, and quite a fleet of motor lorries bringing the necessary material, Arapuni is already a hive of industry.
