BUILDING PROGRESS.
ACCOMMODATION FOR 300 MEN. Contractors’ Offices Finished. The building work at Arapuni now represents completed accommodation for about 300 men. At the dam site camp are now to be seen three barracks for single men, each to accommodate 52 men, and the three thus to accommodate 156. In addition a number of hutments for married men are also nearing completion there. At the Huihuitaha camp, against the permanent village, are the two further barracks—to accommodate together 104 men—and one or two cottages. In the premanent village two three further houses have been started, while across the road the set of offices for the contractors are now completed and the con tractors* agent (Mr. Handown) and his staff removed thither from Putaruru on Monday, though meanwhile still residing in Putaruru. Altogether, with the previous houses built by the Public Works De partment, there would be accommodation now at Arapuni for some 300 men. The barracks and huts in the two temporary villages are of corrugated iron outside, and are comfortably lined within, being far in advance of any previous temporary accommodation at Arapuni.
