MOKAI.

CHURCH SERVICE. On Monday, 11th inst., the Rev Chamberlain, Anglican curate at Pu-

taruru, paid his usual monthly visit to Ongoroto, and conducted service there in the evening*. The following day he walked through to Mokai, a distance of about 16 miles, and conducted evening service here. A meeting of parishioners was afterwards held to discuss church affairs, and it was decided to form a local committee to further the church matters, the first of which will be to determine what amount Mokai can guarantee towards the purchase of a site for a building* of a vicarage at Putaruru. As the local people can always be depended on when any worthy object is needed, it is felt that a substantial sum can be promised. The following* were elected to comprise the local committee: Vicar’s warden, Mr. J. Hurrell; people’s warden, Mr. A. E. Law; vestry, Mesdames R. McKenzie, A. E. Law, Miss H. M. Chalmers and Messrs. A. J. Robinson and G. W. Armstrong. Miss Chalmers was appointed secretary and treasurer. SCHOOL CHILDREN’S CONCERT The local school children, under the able tuition of the headmaster, Mr. H. J. Reaks, and the assistant, Miss H. M. Chalmers, are practising* enthusiastically for an evening* entertainment to be held this week, the object' being* to provide funds for a school library. Given a fine evening, the entertainment is sure to be a bigsuccess. WET WEATHER. As this district at the present time is mainly industrial—not a great amount of farming* work being carried on—the heavy downpour of last week was consequently not appreciated, as it probably would be .in other places, •as here a wet day means no work and consequently no pay for the majority of outdoor workers.
