The Chamber resol veld to write to the League detailing what had been done by the Putaruru people to forward the railway project, pointing out that they were as keenly interested in the matter as the Tokoroa settlers, and suggesting that the proposed meeting at Putaruru to hear representatives of the board and representatives of the company as to the present position be held. MARRIAGE REGISTRATIONS. It was resolved to make application for the appointment of the postmaster at Putaruru as a registrar of marriages as well as births and deaths.

DEVELOPMENT HOARD ABSORBED. Railway Station Lighting. This month’s meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce was held in the Elite ’tearooms, Putaruru, on Monday evening. The president, Mr. F. C. Barnett, was in the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. A. R. Vosper, H. J. W. Scott, Coslett, junr., J. H. Bear, H. Johnson, H. McDonald, J. H. Morris, P. Dowd, C. G. Alcorn, J. R. O. Lochhead and G. E. Martin (secretary). The Putaruru District Development Board in writing formally offered the Chamber its assets on condition that the Chamber took over its liability also and absorbed the board. The assets were set down as cash in hand, £3 7s lOd; amount paid on water supply scheme plans and report (for Putaruru town), £3O 9s. The liability comprised £22 Is still owing on the water scheme plans. The Chamber accepted the offer, on a majority recommendation of the executive. The Chamber also recorded its thanks and appreciation for the work done in the past for Putaruru and district by the board. Current correspondence handed over from the Development Board was then dealt with. ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR STATION. The member for the district, Mr. F. F. Hockly, forwarded a reply he had received from Mr. R. W. McVilly, General Manager of Railways, stating that the Putaruru station ' was being put on the list of those to be lighted with electricity, but he was at present not in a position to say when the installation at the Putaruru station was likely to commence.

Members pointed out that this was very similar to the reply on the matter given by Mr. McVilly to a deputation from the Development Board at the Putaruru station some 15 months ago, so evidently the position had not been advanced since then, although Mr. McVilly had then added that as soon as the railways were paying the installation would be made, ft was resolved to reply to Mr. Hockly to this cfTect, he having added that he would take the matter up with Mr. McVilly again when in Wellington next week. It was also decided to point out that the absence of electric light made the approaches to the station at the time of the evening train ill winter, positively 1 dangerous, as shunting- had to be carried out at times on the lines which the public had to cross to reach the station, and the present lights totally failed to light these crossing-s. AEAPUNI MAIL SERVICE. A suggestion by the Tc AwamutuArapuni Development League that the Chamber work with the league to co-ordinate the two mail services to Arapuni, one from Te Awamutu anti one from Putaruru to make a through service, was received. Members expressed the opinion that such co-ordination did not seem to offer any advantage over the train services. It was resolved to thank the league for its letter and add that if the Chamber found the suggested co-or-dination practicable it would support it. PUTARURU TOWN STREETS. The Under-secretary of the Public Works Department, Mr. F. W. Furket, wrote advising as on April 5 that a report was being- obtained as to a Government grant for forming- the streets through the Government subdivisions in Putaruru, the Chamber resolved to reply inquiring whether the report was now available. LOCAL POLICE STATION. Another letter forwarded by Mr. Hockly was from the Minister for Justice, the Hon. C. J. Parr, advising that the Commissioner of Police had directed the inspector at Hamilton to watch events at Arapuni and Putaruru and report when it became necessary to increase the police strength at Putaruru.

The Chamber resolved to stress To the Minister the importance of having the permanent police station erected at Ptilaruru in readiness for this time. THE RAILWAY NEGOTIATIONS. Copies of the latest correspondence between the Putaruru-Taupo Railway Board and the Taupo Totara Timber Co. were received from the chairman of tlie company, Mr. F. G. Dalziell.
