HERO TESTING.
OPER ATIONS CONCLUDIN G. High Yields Htiii Attained. Herd-testing operations for the season arc now concluding and during the month of May the number of cows tested had decreased by 5b per cent, against those tested during* the flush months. The Morrinsvißo Herd-testing Association is concluding its operations at the end of June for the small number of cows which are still milking. During the most favourable months the association was testing for IS herds in which the total number of cows were 546. During* the past month nine herds were tested, the number of cows totalling 230. For a month so late in the season the May returns show some really creditable figures and some high productions for the month were given. Mr. Roberts’ cow which for April was credited with 123.751 b of butterfat also did well during May, although, as naturally expected, the yield was not as high as for the previous month. The May test revealed that this cow on 30 days should have given 94.81 b of fat with a 6.2 test. Next to Mr. Roberts’ cow the highest yield in the association for that month was 09.091 b of butterfat with a 4.7 test and 14701 bof milk. The lowest individual yield was 2.761 b of fat with a 4.6 test and 601 b of milk. The cow which was responsible for this small amount was a unit of a herd of 96 cows, the average for which was 23.641 b of fat. In this herd the best cow gave 58.141 b of fat for the month.
The highest herd: average for the month was 35.141 b of butterfat. This was for a herd of 13 cows which averaged 7651 b of milk and a test of 4.6. The lowest herd average (16 cows) was 17.681 b of fat and 4011 b of milk with a 4.41 test. The average test for the association has risen from 3.97 in December to 4.74 during May. The tests for each month are:—December, 3.97; January, 4.25; February, 4.64; March, 4.58; April, 4.54; May, 4.74. The tests took a sudden rise during February, which was a very dry month. When ■ the wet weather came during March and April a slight drop was noticed, but a substantial increase was shown during May.
