HINUERA.
VISIT OP MEMBER. Mr. F. F. Hockly, member for the district, paid a visit to Hinuera on Thursday, lie was met by members of the Settlers’ and Ratepayers’ Association, and in company with a deputation from these, he inspected the appointments at Hinuera railway station. The inadequacy and insecurity of the cattle-yards were pointed out to him, and also the necessity of a loading bank. The danger of the high pine trees near the entrance to the station yard was brought under his notice, and also the fact that the gate was in the wrong position. He was asked to make representations to have tin* pig-weighing- scales at the railway station placed under the control of the Department,’ instead of nder that of a private firm, as at present. The necessity of a lock-up room at the station for parcels was brought under the member’s notice, as -was also the question of the reduction of freights, particularly with regard to pigs and butter.
Mr. Hockly, pouching- on the appointments at the station, said that he would have the requests of the deputation speedily brought under the notice of the proper authorities. With regard to the pig scales, he thought the idea of putting- them directly under the control of the department a good one. He would note that they were willing-, if necessary, to pay an extra charge of one penny per pig* to cover the cost of the innovation; but he thought that the business could probably be arranged without extra charge to the consignors. As far as the freight on butter and pigs was concerned, a pew schedule with regard to butter was soon coming- into operation, and he understood that matters with regard to the carriage of pigs were shortly coming under review.
In the afternoon Mr. Hockly, accompanied by Messrs. P. Hawke ancl Pond, junr., paid a visit of inspection to many soldier settlers in tte vicinity of Hinuera. These placing- their opinions, and in some cases their
grievances before the member received a most sympathetic hearing. Mr. Hockly said he would look into the question of whether there was any -right to appeal with regard to revaluation. Certain other matters with regard to their holdings, brought from the member the promise that he would personally interview the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the South Auckland Land District with a view to adjustment. METHODIST CHURCH. Special services were held in the Hinuera Methodist Church yesterday (Sunday) to mark the completion of the extension and renovation of the church building. The Rev. P. Cooke, of Matamata, occupied the pulpit, and prior to delivering his sermon made a few congratulatory remarks to the congregation on the progress that had been maintained. Special anthems were sung by an augmented choir, under the baton of Mr. R. Hawke, the soloists being Mrs. S. Clarke, Miss Mona German and Mr. W. Settle. 1
It is understood that a Matamata picture producer is shortly to exhibit a film at Hinuera in aid of the Sunday School. CROQUET DANCE.
The Hinuera Ladies’ Croquet Club held an enjoyable dance in the Hinucra Hall on Thursday evening*. Mrs. Ryan (piano) and Mr. A. Randrup (violin) contributed excellent music,
and a very tasty supper was provided. During the evening, a waltzing competition was held, the same being won by Miss Robinson and Mr. A. Downie. Mr. J. Hayes made an excellent M.C. AN EPISODE. While a % county council employee, living in a small tent near the railway station, was cooking- a meal the other day, the wind fanned the flame in the direction of his tent, which caught fire, being completely destroyed. AGRICULTURAL. Showing the mildness of recent weather, a Hinuera farmer, who had a good growth of radishes last spring, planted a second crop from the se£d. He has now a fine growth, making- two in the season. PERSONAL. Messrs. Munro and Plummer, school inspectors, attached to the Auckland Education Board, inspected the Hinuera school on Thursday and apparently were well satisfied. Miss V. Spence (late of Swanson) has succeeded Miss L. Sleep (transferred to Monovale) as assistant teacher at (he Hinuera school. Mrs. J. Dunstan, of Waihi, has been spending a holiday with her daughter, IVUs. P. Hawke, of Hinu- i era.
