There are now 53 milk-recording societies in England, which deal witih the returns of nearly* 125,000 cows. The scheme was launched in 1914. In the following year the average yield of all the cows recorded was 579 gallons. In the 1920-1921 season there was an advance of 640 gallons in the average; in 1921-1922 the figure rose to 651 gallons, and in the year completed last October a still further increase is certain. The dairy Shorthorn predominates among the recordanimals, about 70 per cent of those registered belonging to that breed. British Friesians come next in point of numerical strength, and account for about ten per cent of the total.
