ROADSIDE ADVERTISING.
COUNTIES’ OPPOSITION. A circular on the question of roadside advertising was received from the executive of the Counties Association at Friday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council. It read: “ This matter as affecting roads under the jurisdiction of your council and the landscape generally has been brought to the notice of the executive committee of the New Zealand Counties Association. The committee hopes that your council will give this matter earnest consideration and in conjunction with motor unions will use all means in its power to prohibit this unsightly practice of advertising on hoardings and similar devices.” I lie engineer said one particularly objectionable advertisement had been put up on the roadside in various parts of the county, besides many other advertisements. Also, one motor firm, which put its sign throughout the county, usually in black paint, had had the audacity to “plaster” the side of one of the council’s iron motor sheds with its sign. The clerk said that by law the council had power to control all such advertising on the roads and charge for it. It was resolved to request the proprietors of the objectionable advertisement, and also the motor firm mentioned, to remove their advertisements. it was also agreed to advise others that they should get the council’s permission before erecting* advertisements on the roadside.
