HAYSTACK FIRES.

SUSPICIOUS CIRCUM STANCES.

Farmers’ Heavy Losses. On Wednesday morning* a GO ton haystack on Mr. C. D. Rollett’s farm at Peria was destroyed by fire. Strange to relate at exactly the same time on Thursday morning foul* stacks on Mr. J. R. Self’s farm at Peria were noticed burning simultaneously and were destroyed. The owner of the latter had only arrived in Matamata the day before. The circumstances of the fires have created suspicion with the police, who, with the owners of the stacks, are doubtful that the cause was spontaneous combustion. There was no issurancc on any of tile stacks, which were valued at about £IOO and £3OO respectively. Up to Saturday no further light could be. thrown on the matter.
