ROAD TO SELWYN.
THE Government offer of £IOOO assistance towards the construction of a direct road from Putaruru to Selwyn Timber Company’s sawmilling and farming centre at Mangatapu will probably prove an incentive for the early construction of the road. The balance which the landowners concerned are required to find is, of course, no small sum, but, if they deem the road worth this amount to them!, the money cab probably b-; raised by the constitution of their properties as a special rating area pulpose. Once the road is through to Mangatapu it could be continued \ery cheaply, we understand, thence to within two miles of Arahiwi by utilising the Timber Company’s old tramway track, and if the Government or Highways, Board would then grant further assistance towards opening the road for the remaining two miles, the direct through road connection from Putaruru to Arahiwi, and-thence to Mamaku and Rotorua, would be established. This route then would jj§l!to a very strong claim for - ! u , j.. jrata}g£ the main highway t > ||H&r shorter and m k|i]f:i:-y'llyyppjljß^than the -n* ■Biku hill.
