PUTARURU TO MANGATAPU.

QUESTION OF DIRECT ROAD Government Offers Cl 000. The proposed Mamaku - Arn . wi» Sclwyn-Putaruru road is the subject of a letter received on Friday lust oy the chairman of the Putaruru Di. r i t Development Board from the Her. J. G Coates, Minister for Public Works. The Minister writes:— “ When I was passing- through Putaruru on December :1 last a deputation from your board waited upon me and brought up the matter of opening the Mamaku-Arahiwi-Scl-wyn-Putaruru road. In reply, I have new the honour to inform you that full investigations regarding this road have been made and it is considered that the formation is not justified by present traffic requirements. The most urgent need appears to be a road giving access from Putaruru to Mangatapu mill, where, I understand, about 150 people are at present residing and are without access. “ The construction of this length of road is -estimated to cost £3670, and it is considered that property holders in the vicinity, on account of the enhancement to the value of these properties should the road be constructed should contribute substantially. The question of Government assistance has been considered and if the county and interested parties are prepared to proceed with the work I am willing to contribute the sum of £IOOO and provision for this amount will be made in next year’s estimates.”
