THE completion of the Mangaiti deviation is a matter lor congratulation to the Public WtJFks Department, which since re-starting the work, has shown very commendable zeal to not only* cany the job through expeditiously, but also to give a roau that would indeed be a pleasure to traffic end a credit to themselves. Certainly the original aim of having the road open by Christmas was not attained, but this was due entirely to the job proving a much larger one than had been originally anticipated, owing to die large amount of rock and the springs encountered. However, cons'stent endeavour and ingenuity overcame these difficulties without undue delay, and the two gangs that were engaged on the work have complete*! a very good roadway to a width of 18 feet. Beyond that the original road is narrow, but nevertheless gives good travelling. On the deviation the soft portions have been heavily metalled. and no trouble there is anticipated, while of the remaining lengths some are entirely of rock and the others of pumice, which usually settles clown to give a splendid traffic surface. If*, however, weaknesses are revealed during the winter plenty of metal is available there to remedy this.
