Matamata farmers are feeling the effects of the recent dry spell. There is a scarcity of food and the milk isupply is decreasing more rapidly 1 than it should for this time of the j year. Experiments at Wanganui East .have shown that salt will kill gorse. •iThree years ago tlie gorse was grubbed and burned and when the new (growth appeared salt was applied, (with the result that the plants were killed. The salt used was purchased jat 4s per cwt as it was wliat had been 'utilised in conditioning hides. The land was barren for a time after the gorse was exterminated and -later grew grass and clover. Occasionally young plants of gorse appear, but are quickly kilMd by the application of tlie salt.
