STOCK SALES.

MORItINSYILLE. The first stock sale of the new year , in Morrinsvillc took place at the Farmers’ Auctioneering* Co.’s yards on Friday, when there was an aver- : age yarding of most classes of stock. The prices obtained were very fair for this time of the year. The beef ! prices were down but nearly everything was sold. There was little demand for calves. The sheep and pigs sold at fair rates. The following are the prices:—Beef: Fat steers £7 Ss to £8 8s; light fat steers £5 13s to £G 3 0s; fat cows £! 6s to £5 8s; lighter sorts £3 to £4; fat heifers £4 36s to £5 4s; stove cows £L to £1 10s; 15months Jersey heifers £5 6s: Jerseycross heifers £3 7s to £3 30s; Jerseycross weaner calves £2 ss; others 10s to 3 3s. Dairy cattle: Fair quality Shorthorn lieifers £6 5s to £4 ss; Holstein £6 10s to £7; bulls for freezing £4 10s. Sheep: Fat lambs 23s to 255; cull lambs 12s 3d; store wethers 265. -Pigs: Baconers £3 Is to £3 6s; good porkers £2 16s; lighter £2 ss; well-grown slips 31s to 28s; weaners Os to £l. Ewes: 641 b and under, 4.3 d. Prime woolly lambs: 421 b and under, lOd; 431 b and over, 9d. Second quality lambs: 9d. DAIRY PRODUCE PRODUCTION. The official figures of the Dairy Division show that there has bien a decrease in butter during the first five months of this season and an increase in cheese. The figures show that for December there was a decrease of 481 tons in the quantity of butter and an increase of 1010 tons of cheese. For the five months ending December there was a decrease of 4779 tons of butter and an increase of 11,135 tons of cheese. On a butter-fat basis there is an increase of .8 per cent in the total New Zealand production for the five months of this season compared with the corresponding period of 1922-23. Auckland’s quota to the above quantities to the end of December was 58.7 per cent of the Dominion’s total production for butter and 17.7 per c4nt for cheese. Auckland produced 18,135 tons of butter against 19,271 tons for the corresponding period of the previous year, being a decrease of 1136 tons. In cheese 5088 tons were made against 2504 tons for the same period of 1922. The estimated exportable output of butter from the Argentine for 1923-24 is 35,000 to 40,000 tons. MATAMATA. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., held their usual sale on Wednesday. There was a medium yarding, combined with a fairly good attendance, and moderately brisk bidding, although weather conditions told somewhat against the sale. Prices were:—Beef cattle: Fat steers £6; fat cows £3 10s to £4 7s; fresh coirs £1 10s to £2 10s; stove cows £1 to £1 3 0s; light three-year ' steers £3 15s; bulls 10s to £3. Dairy cattle: Cows £6 10s; springing heifers £4 10s to £6. Sheep: Aged ewes with lambs at foot £l. Pigs: Weaners 18s; slips 27s to 30s.

HAMILTON. At the Farmers’ Auctioneering' ! Co.’s Hamilton sale on Tuesday there was a moderate yarding of sheep and ; cattle but pigs were in considerable ' quantity. The demand for fat sheep 1 was good, wethers selling from 30s to 32s lOd, ewes 24s Id. Beef also , sold under good competition and values advanced a little on the previous week. Steers made £7 14s to £B, j cows, best, £4 10s to £5 18s, the value per 300 for well-finished lots being equal to 20s. Medium cows made ; from £3 5s to £4 ss. Forward sorts I made from £2 to £2 17s 6d, store j cows £1 5s to £1 15s. Small lots of ; yearling heifers made from 32s 6d to i£2 calves from 7s to 17s according to I quality. Tim supply of fat pigs was j large and keen competition existed to j tlie conclusion. Baconers made from 1 £3 to £3 3 os, porkers £2 7s 6d tp -£2 1 17s 6d, unfinished sorts to £2 ss, I slips 20s to 31s 6d, weaners 7s 6d to 15s. THE LONDON MARKET. Argentine Frozen Beef.—Ox fores, 33d; ox hinds, 4ad. Mutton.—There is a firmer tendency owing to shortage of supplies.
