MAIL TO ARAPUNI.
THE chief postmaster's explanation of the establishment of a daily mail run between To Awamutu and Arapuni indicates that although there is ar- yet no contract for any mail service to Arapuni the ingenuity of someone or some group of interests on the Te Awamutu side has definitely succeeded in establishing a service from that town, obviously with a view to encouraging passenger and goods traffic for now and the future to use the Te Awamutu route to Arapuni rather than via Putaruru. One cannot but admire the businesslike acumen of the Te Awamutu people ir. this matter, but with all the advantages as regards proximity and road access attaching to Putaruru, it appears to us that a better service from Putaruru to Arapuni cou*d be arranged on exactly the same basis as Te Awamutu has used. There is already a contract for a tri-weeklv service from Putaruru to Puketurua—as there was from Te Awamutu to Pukeatua—and we can see. no valid reason why this too could not be increased to a daily run, on a : lightly-increased payment by the Postal Department, and extended gratis to Arapuni. If necessary, it would undoubtedly pay the business people of Put arum to see to it that this paid the contractor too, in order “hat the'service should be assured, and as we understand a daily motor cartage service is already in operation between Putaruru and Arapuni this should be but a simple matter. Finally, such a service would have the crowning advantage of going right to the Public Works office at Arapuni, obviating the necessity of walking even a quarter of a mile with the mails.
