j A FAIRY OPERETTA. 1 Prizes for Past Year. j The Church of England Sunday i School at Putavuru marked the end ; of its year 1923 by a concert in the Town Hall, in which the scholars themselves were the principal enterj tainers. The opening item was an | orchestral overture, played by an orj chestra comprising; Miss Sayers (piano), Messrs.* H. and R. Sayers j (violins) and H. Pearse (cornet). Then followed a very pretty and humorous operetta, “ Soot and the Fairies,” played by the children in costume with a piquancy that made it a great success, giving* much pleasure to the audience. The caste was as follows:—“ Queen Lily,” Edna Pearse; “ Dr. Sunlight,” Ada Beer ; “ Lady Soapsuds,” Mavis Bcca; “ Fairy,” Zoe Barnett: “ Captain Soot,” Reggie Rolfe; “ Secretary,” Albert Beca; “ Wag,” .Toe Yandl.e; “ Lord Bootlace,” Jack Martin; “ Baron Hairbrush,” Terence Leggatt; chorus, the Sunday school. Mrs. J. Rolfe trained the children for the occasion and to her the chief credit for the concert is due. Mrs. J. Barnes acted as accompanist?. The programme concluded with further items as follow: Recitations, “My Secret,” “ Little Farmer,” G. Yandle; song, “ When London Sleeps,” Reggie Rolfe; recitation, “ The Last Shot,” Dick Rolfe; , finale, orchestral selection, and spectacular flag march, song, and tableau by the children. The presentation of the Sunday school prizes for the year was then performed by the vicar, the Rev. W. E. Connolly. The children who received them were as follow:—Special prizes for highest marks in school: Frank Sayers, Reggie Rolfe, Gladys Howland. Further prizes: Boys— John Martin, Jack Howland, Richard Rolfe, Will Yandle, Basil Scott, James Barnett, Gordon Sayers, Joe Yandle, Neville Barnett, Jack Rolfe, Norman Robinson, William Donaldson, Keith Donaldson, Eric Barnes, Noel Barnes, Terence Leggatt, Edgar Nicklin, Albert Beca, Brice Howland. Girls— Freda Martin, Evelyn Lowe, Edna Pearse, Kathleen Lowe, Mavis Howland, Ada Beca, Mavis Beca, IVJary Lowe, Zoe Barnett, Mary Halse, Clarice Woodgafe, Alice Hogan, Nancy Howland, Maxine Donaldson, Peggy Donaldson, Eva Donaldson, Joan Hogan, Vir.r- inia Donaldson. The occasion, which concluded with a dance for the adults, was a financial success, benefiting the Sunday school funds.
