LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The formation of the Tokoroa Rabbit Board was gazetted last week. The territory taken jn comprises approximately 120,000 acres and is the largest tract of country controlled by one board in the province. The meeting of the Putaruru-Tanpo Railway Board this month dealt with the present position in regard to the negotiations between the board and the Taupe Tdtara* Timber Co. It Is understood that the next meeting of the board will probably be held early J ~ hn-fajiuary, after which the conference the Government, the board and the company will take place in Auckland. The expectation that the Mangai-ti deviation would be open by Christmas was not fulfilled. By Saturday, December 15, it was apparent that with •i great deal of rock work yet- to be done two to three weeks’ work would .-till be necessary to give a vehicular track along the new route. This precluded all hope of having the deviation open by Christmas and consequently the gang stopped work on the 15th for the holidays. Miss J. I.ochhead, who has beer, a resident of Putaruru for approximately two years past,' returned to Hawke's Bay last Friday. During her >ojcrrcn here Miss Loch head took ail active part in local affairs coming within her scope, and. in particular was secretary to the ladies’ branch of I he golf club. Prior to her departure she was entertained by several of her young lady friends here and presented by them with a dainty purse as a i-okeh of their regard for her. The trip occupied 20 days. The sheep arrived in goon condition, there being no casualties on the long journev. The sheep were auctioned by Messrs. Dalget.y and Co.. Ltd., ai Hie Cambridge saleyards. They were all 2 and 4tooth wethers and ewes, mostly Romney cross. The wethers realised from 0d to 27s 3d, and the ewes brought ar. average of about 24s 3d. The prices were considered satisfactory. .
