TOKOROA.

THE PROGRESS LEAGUE. State Advances. At the Tokoroa Progress League’s last monthly meeting much dissatisfaction was exrpessed at the administration of the Advances to Settlers Department. Political promises made with respect to this department were not justified, it was stated, by the actual benefits received by the settler. Also if the department' would take the applicant who bad been refused an advance a little more into "ts confidence and give him a direct business reason for ,ts refusal it would tend to leave a much better impression. As it was, be paid his £1 fee, waited months and too often got nothing. IMMIGRATION DISAPPOINTMENTS. The Government’s apparent apathy with regard to immigration was also severely criticised. Much disappointment was expressed that more advantage had not been taken of promoting- immigration of the right kind during the English delegation’s visit to this country. However, it was hoped that the Dominion’s Prime Minister, the Hon. W. F. Massey, would have something- to say on his return with respect to the matter. Several members of the League present said that when in Auckland recently they bad been told in answer to their enquiries that practically no suitable farm labour was available. This was the position in the Dominion; yet it was understood that England had thousands of the class wanted and a class anxious to emigrate. PUBLIC DOMAIN. Before the close of the league’s meeting the president, Mr. C. P. Lock, reported progress with respect to the securing of a suitable area for a public domain. The original area set aside by the .Matarawa Land Co., opposite the public hall, had been thought less suitable than a similar area bordering on the "Whakawru stream. The directors of the Matarawa Co. bad been interviewed and had most kindly consented to the exchange of site. Tt now remained for the necessary transfer of plans ancl registration at the Lands Office.
