PERSONAL.
At the meeting of parishioners of St. Peter's Church, on Friday evening, Rev. Mr Stace asked those present to pass a vote of congratulation to Mr George Hayden, who had that day attained the age of 92 years. Mr Stace added that Mr Hayden had for 40 years been connected with Church work in Havelock, and had been a member of the" Vestry for about 15 years.
The death occurred on Thursday last, at Masterton, of Sergeant Henry MeArdle, who about 18 months ago left Havelock after serving for forty years in the Police Force and as Clerk of the Court at Havelock. At different times deceased was stationed at Charleston, Brighton, Reef ton, Cobden, Lyall, Hokitika, Masterton, New Plymouth, Waipawa, and Nelson. Rev. Father O'Sullivan, who conducted Mass at St. Mary's, Havelock, on Sunday, is acting in the place of a Priest who was appointed to take the vacancy created'by the departure of Father Fay, but who is not yet able to come to Marlborough. Father O'Sullivan was in Havelock 17 years ago, with Father Aubrey, and referred to the marked evidences of prosperity that are now everywhere apparent in the town and district.
At the meeting of the Riwaka (Nelson) School Committee, held on 6fch April, it was resolved to recommend to the Education Board Messrs R. Irwin (Havelock) and Wilson (Reefton) for the Headmastership of the Riwaka School. On Saturday last Mr Irwin received official intimation of this fact, and he will probably accept the appointment. Mr Irwin has been in charge of the local School for about eleven months, and in that time the average attendance has increased by 20 per cent.
The death occurrsd at Wellington on Friday last of Mr W. H. Eyes. Deceased was the fifth Superintendent of the Marlborough Province, and he defeated Sir Frederick Weld, "afterwards Premier, for "tyairau, in the General Assembly of 1860. He continued to represent Wairau till 1890, when he resigned in order to take the positions of Provincial Secretary and Commissioner of Crown Lands.
