HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce have received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 6th April The mutton market is weak, with a very moderate demand; there is a scarcity of prime quality; the average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is B£d per lb, North Island 2fd per lb: Australian mutton is quoted at Bfd per lb, River Plate at B£d. The lamb market is quiet, stock being heavy, and a large supply is expected; the average price to-day for New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is s|d per lb; for brands other than Canterbury 4£d per lb; there is a scarcity of heavy weights. There is a better demand for beef, the average price for hindquarters of New Zealand beef being 3|d per lb, fores 2|d per lb. The butter market is dull, except for best quality; some holders of butter are forcing sales, and buyers are holding back expecting prices to go lower; the average price of choicest New Zealand butter to-day is 99s per cwt, Victorian 975, Danish 105 s, Siberian 98s. The cheese market is slightly weaker, with less demand at 68s per cwt. The hemp market is very quiet, owing to large shipments arriving from Manila; the market is speculative; the price of New Zealand hemp, good fair grade, on spot, is £35 per ton, April to June shipments £34 10s per ton; Manila hemp, fair current grade, on spot, £BB per ton; New Zealand hemp in stock, 899 tons. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, there being light stocks on hand; buyers have been offering for seed more freely; for 171 b bright dressed seed 53s per cwt. is realised.
