A POLAR BEAR AND HER CUBS.
A party of whalers once chased a female bear and two cubs across a field of ice. The mother, anxious for her children, ran ahead every now and then, and afterwards paused till they came up to tier, all the time encouraging them hy constant barks to bo as fast as they could. As the sailors gained upon them, she at last took to pushing them along the ice, carrying and even throwing them. The cults seemed to understand what this pitching and tossing meant, for they always [ticked themselves up nimbly and placed themselves in readiness for the next throw. The affectionate zeal of the mother was crowned with success ; she succeeded in saving them.
