BRIGHT THINGS FOR RAPID READING, QUITE SIMPLE, Intending purchasers of motor-cars are frequently more mystified than instructed by the explanations of salesmen, but London’s motorbusiness has one salesman who carefully avoids technicalities. Said he to a prospective customer:— -‘You see when the piston comes up and compresses a lump of gas a spark jumps in and touches it off, and the engine gives a poke, which turns the crankshaft around. Then the piston comes back and chases out the burned gas, and takes in a fresh charge as it goes back; then it comes up and the load gets a spark, and the piston is blown back, and the crankshaft gets another poke just as before. Every time a spark is let in the engine gets a poke and gives it to the chankshaft, you see. It’s perfectly simple, and simply perfect.” KEEP SMILING. Cheerfulness is a good habit, just as worry is a bad habit. You can cultivate the one just as easily as the other. When you get where you can laugh at an unpleasant experience, the sting is gone from it. Cultivate the habit of looking at the bright side of things. It is an accepted fact that cheerfulness and pleasurable emotions have a happy influence on the process of digestion. The old custom of exciting laughter at table by jesters was founded on a true physiological basis. Cn the contrary worry, anxiety, fright, or extreme excitement of various kinds have a depressing effect on digestion, not only in the stomach, but also in the iu'.estines. There seems to be a disturbance of both the circulatory and nervous system. Nervous- dyspepsia and loss of weight often follow prolonged anxiety.
