A MINIATURE SALT LAKE.

About 40 miles south of Zuni, New Mexico, there is a singular depression in a plain of cretaceous sandstone, about, a mik 1 in diameter, with walls 'lsoft. high. In the midst of this exists a shallow lake, 4,000 ft. long by :'.,oooft. broad, the waters of which contain 20 per cent, of-salt. This has been a source of supply for salt used by Indians and Mexicans for centuries, and lately the salt has been hauled to surrounding ranches, everybody helping himself. The annual output is about 1,000 tons, but the processes are crude, and it is believed that the deposit can be developed into considerable economic importance.
